Wrought Iron Gates

Custom wrought iron driveway, entry and pedestrian gates for Bellflower, fabricated in our own shop and finished to resist corrosion.

Bellflower Metal Gates designs and fabricates custom wrought iron gates in Bellflower, California, serving surrounding cities including La Mirada, Cypress, Buena Park, Pico Rivera and Stanton. We build iron driveway gates, entry gates, pedestrian and side-yard gates, and matching fence panels, all cut, welded, prepared and coated in our own shop rather than assembled from imported stock panels.

Iron remains the most requested gate material here, and in Bellflower it carries a regulatory advantage as well as an appearance one. The city’s zoning code treats transparent and open construction more generously than solid construction in a front yard, and it names wrought iron explicitly as the exception that allows real height on a commercial frontage. That makes ironwork a compliance route as much as a design preference, which is not something most homeowners are told when they compare quotes.

The other thing worth knowing is that iron gates are repairable in a way most alternatives are not. A leaf struck by a reversing vehicle, or a bottom rail that has finally corroded through, is a cut-and-weld job rather than a replacement, provided the ornamental work above is intact. That changes the long-run economics considerably, and it is the main argument for steel on a property where a gate is likely to take knocks.

Custom Ironwork We Build

Iron Driveway and Entry Gates

Driveway gates are the bulk of our ironwork, built as single or double swing leaves, slides, or bi-folds depending on what the opening allows. We fabricate from ASTM A787 steel tube with solid bar pickets, sized so the frame carries the span without relying on the infill for rigidity. Every wide leaf gets a diagonal brace running from the hinge stile down toward the latch stile, because a wide iron gate without one will sag inside its first year regardless of how good the hinges are.

Pedestrian and Side-Yard Gates

Pedestrian gates take proportionally more use than driveway gates and wear at their hinges and latch faster for it. We build them from the same tube and picket stock so they match the driveway gate and any fencing, and fit ball-bearing hinges with grease fittings plus a hydraulic closer or electromagnetic lock where the gate needs to hold itself shut. Getting the latch geometry right matters here, since a pedestrian gate that has to be lifted to latch will be propped open within a month.

Ornamental Detail and Design

The detail is what separates custom ironwork from a stock panel: arched or radiused top rails, twisted and hammered pickets, scrollwork panels, cast rosettes, and finials or spear tops. We draw the design to the actual opening and to the elevation of the house rather than to a standard radius, because an arch whose curve does not relate to the pilaster spacing reads wrong from the street even when every dimension is technically correct.

Matching Fence Panels and Railings

A gate that does not relate to what stands either side of it looks bought rather than designed. We fabricate matching fence panels, pilaster infills, handrails and stair railings to the same picket spacing, rail heights and finish, and where existing ironwork is being extended we measure and photograph it first. Where the existing work is old we normally recommend recoating it at the same time, so the new and the old do not diverge visibly within a couple of years.

Materials, Finish and Bellflower’s Rules

Steel Specification and Fabrication

What the trade calls wrought iron today is mild steel worked into traditional forms, and modern steel is stronger and far more consistent than the historical material. We fabricate from ASTM A787 tube with solid bar pickets, welding rather than bolting the frame so there are no fasteners to work loose and no crevices to trap water. Because we build in our own shop, a panel damaged in handling or a joint that lands out of square is remade the same week rather than reordered.

Galvanizing, Primer and Powder Coating

Corrosion starts where nobody looks, which is why finish sequence matters more than finish brand. All steel is prepared and coated before assembly so the inside faces and joint interiors are protected, welded joints receive zinc-rich primer, and TGIC polyester powder coating goes over the top and holds its colour under direct sun far longer than a wet-applied enamel. Where a gate will sit in standing water or take constant sprinkler overspray, hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 goes underneath the coating.

Height, Transparency and the Front Yard

Bellflower section 17.72.060(F) limits a fence, wall or hedge in a required front yard to 42 inches, and allows 48 inches where the material above 24 inches is at least 50 percent transparent. An open picket or scrollwork iron design meets that test and a solid panel does not, so ironwork buys six inches of height at the front of a property that no other material can. On commercial frontage section 17.72.060(D) goes considerably further, permitting wrought iron to six feet in the front ten feet where anything else is held to 42 inches.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does Bellflower's code favour wrought iron?

Twice, in two different ways. In a required front yard, section 17.72.060(F) allows 48 inches instead of 42 where the material above 24 inches is at least 50 percent transparent, which an open picket design meets and a solid panel does not. Separately, in the front ten feet of a commercial or industrial property, section 17.72.060(D) permits a fence constructed of wrought iron to reach six feet where anything else is held to 42 inches.

Is modern wrought iron actually wrought iron?

Almost never, and that is not a problem. True wrought iron has not been produced commercially for decades. What the trade calls wrought iron today is mild steel, usually ASTM A787 tube with solid bar pickets, worked into the same forms. Modern steel is more consistent and stronger than historical wrought iron, and with correct galvanizing and coating it outlasts it comfortably in this climate.

How do you stop an iron gate rusting?

By treating the parts nobody sees. Steel is prepared and coated before the frame is assembled, so joint interiors and inside faces are protected rather than sealed in bare. Welded joints get zinc-rich primer, and TGIC polyester powder coating goes over the top. Where a gate will see standing water or heavy irrigation we specify hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 underneath the finish as well.

Can you repair or restore an older iron gate?

Usually, and it is often the better economics. The bottom rail corrodes first because it holds water, and cutting out that section and welding in new tube is straightforward. What makes restoration worthwhile is the ornamental work above it: reproducing period scrollwork and cast elements costs considerably more than the frame did, so a gate whose pickets and detail are sound is worth saving.

What iron gate styles suit houses around here?

Arched tops with twisted or hammered pickets and scrollwork in the upper panel suit the Spanish and Mediterranean elevations found throughout this part of the county. Wider, lower frontages take a heavy-railed ranch design with widely spaced verticals. Where a house is mid-century, a plain vertical picket or a flat-bar design reads better than ornament. We draw to the elevation rather than from a catalogue.

Does an iron gate need more maintenance than aluminum?

Some, but less than people expect if it was finished properly. Aluminum will never corrode, which is its genuine advantage. A correctly prepared, galvanized and powder-coated steel gate needs the coating inspected periodically and any chip touched up before moisture reaches the steel, plus hinge greasing. The offsetting advantage is that steel can be repair-welded years later, so damage is fixable rather than terminal.
