The single most useful thing to know about a failed gate opener is that the operator is frequently not what failed. An automatic gate is a system: a leaf, its footings, its hinges or rollers, a drive train, a control board and a set of monitored safety devices, and a fault anywhere in that chain stops the gate. Because the operator is the visible powered component, it takes the blame and often gets replaced, after which the same underlying fault destroys the new one on the same schedule.
We diagnose in the order faults actually occur rather than the order parts are easiest to sell. That means checking supply and voltage at the operator, then the board and its monitored inputs, then the drive train, then the gate itself for binding, drag or a settled footing loading the motor. A gate that has become physically harder to move will kill any operator fitted to it, and no amount of new electronics changes that.
Diagnosing a Failed Gate Operator

No Power and No Response
When nothing happens at all we start at the supply rather than the operator. Voltage drop across a long buried run is a recurring cause here and presents as an intermittent fault that comes and goes with load, which is why we measure at the operator itself rather than at the breaker. Beyond supply, the usual culprits are a tripped protective device, a failed transformer, or a control board that has taken a surge. Battery-backed and solar units add their own charge-state faults to check.
Motor Runs, Gate Does Not Move
An operator that runs audibly while the leaf stays still has a mechanical fault between motor and gate. On swing operators that is typically a sheared drive pin, a stripped gearbox or a failed arm connection. On slide and cantilever gates it is more often chain or a drive rack that has parted from the frame or worn its teeth. We check the pinion whenever a rack has been slipping, because a rack that has been riding badly has almost certainly been grinding the gear behind it.
Stops, Reverses or Will Not Close
A gate that reverses partway or refuses the closing direction is usually reporting a safety fault rather than a mechanical one. UL 325 requires two independent means of entrapment protection and modern operators monitor them continuously, refusing to run if one is faulted or disconnected. Misaligned photo eyes, damaged safety edges and waterlogged loops all produce this. It can equally be a genuine obstruction, including a leaf binding on a driveway that crowns partway through its travel.
Remotes, Keypads and Control Faults
Access devices fail in ways that look exactly like operator failures, because a remote, a keypad and an intercom all reach the board through the same input. Remotes lose pairing after a board change, receivers suffer interference, and direct-buried access cabling corrodes through. We test the control path end to end rather than replacing the visible unit first, and where the underlying wiring is the problem we pull new cable in conduit so the same repair does not recur.

What We Repair Rather Than Replace
Control boards, capacitors, limit switches, gearboxes, arms, chain, sprockets, rack sections, rollers and safety devices are all serviceable items, and we carry the common ones. Replacing the whole operator is the right call in two situations: when the unit is old enough that boards are no longer manufactured, and when it was undersized for the leaf from the start. In the second case we say so plainly, since refitting the same class of unit simply repeats the failure.
Safety Devices and Standards Compliance
Repairs are an opportunity to find out what is missing. Gates installed before current practice frequently lack a second means of entrapment protection, or have had devices bridged out to silence a nuisance fault. Where we find that, we restore the monitored input and tell you rather than leaving a gate in service with half its required protection disabled. We also report the gate’s construction against ASTM F2200 and quote any screening or edge protection separately so you can decide.
Preventive Servicing on High-Cycle Gates
Cycle count, not age, determines how a gate wears. A community or commercial gate cycling continuously wears rollers, chain, hinge pins and drive components on a schedule that can be anticipated, and replacing those on a planned visit is a fraction of the cost of the emergency call when one fails and damages something else on the way out. We grease hinges and bearings, check and adjust limits, test every safety device through full travel, and report what is approaching the end of its life.
