Its weakness is code drift: a code shared with a gardener, a cleaner and two contractors is eventually a code the street knows, and changing it means telling everyone. We mount keypads at a reachable height on the driver’s side at a sensible distance from the leaf, wired back through conduit, and specify weather-rated units because a keypad that fails is usually one that has been taking direct irrigation for a year.

Handheld and visor remotes remain the fastest way through a gate you use daily, and rolling-code receivers are now standard so a transmitter cannot simply be captured and replayed. What is the difference between telephone entry and a cellular system?

A telephone entry system dials a resident's phone over a line the building provides, which historically meant a copper landline and increasingly means a voice-over-IP service that may behave differently. A cellular unit carries its own connection on a mobile network and needs no building line at all, which is why it now suits most retrofits. Cellular units also add app control and access logs that traditional telephone entry cannot provide.

Can I give a delivery driver or contractor temporary access?

Where the existing operator turns out to be undersized for the leaf we will say so, since a new keypad does not fix a motor running beyond its duty cycle.

What happens to access control when a tenant moves out?

On a code or app-based system you revoke that user and nothing else changes. On a system built around physical remotes you are dependent on the remote coming back, which frequently it does not, and the practical remedy has historically been reprogramming every remaining unit. That difference is usually the strongest argument for app-based access on a rental or multi-tenant property.

Does access control interfere with the gate's safety devices?

It should not, and if it appears to then something is wired incorrectly. Access control triggers the open command, while entrapment protection under UL 325 is monitored separately by the operator and takes precedence over any open signal. A system that lets an access device override a safety input has been miswired, and we would correct that rather than work around it.
