Section 15.20.020(B) requires the gate to be of a size that completely fills any opening in the fence or wall. That rules out the gaps that accumulate on older enclosures, where a gate has been replaced with a stock size and packed out at one side, or where a post has moved and left a space beside the leaf. We fabricate to the measured opening rather than to a nominal width, and where a post has shifted we reset it instead of widening the gate to cover the gap.

Swing Direction and Street Frontage

Pool barrier practice is for the gate to swing away from the pool, so pressure from the pool side pushes it closed. Where a pool enclosure gate also fronts a street or sidewalk, that has to be reconciled with Bellflower Municipal Code section 9.04.040, which makes it unlawful to maintain a gate that opens outward over any part of a public highway open to pedestrian or vehicular traffic. Resolving both at once is a design question, and it is far easier settled on a drawing than on site.

State Law and New Enclosures

Almost every pool gate that fails to latch consistently is failing on geometry rather than hardware. A leaf that has dropped on worn hinges, or a post whose footing has settled, arrives at the keeper fractionally low and bounces off instead of catching. We correct the cause rather than adjusting the latch to suit a sagging gate, since a latch shimmed to catch a dropped leaf will stop catching again as soon as the leaf moves further. Posts are footed to the leaf weight, and hinges are sized to it.

Materials and Corrosion Protection

A pool enclosure is a permanently wet, chlorinated environment, which is hard on steel and unforgiving of a poor finish. Aluminum extruded from 6005-T5 and 6061-T6 alloy will not corrode at all and is a strong default here. Bringing an Existing Barrier Back Into Compliance

Much of this work is correcting enclosures that were compliant once. The usual findings are a closer that has lost tension, a latch below the required height, a gate that no longer fills its opening after a post moved, or hinges worn enough that the leaf drags. We assess the whole barrier rather than only the gate, report what does not meet the requirement, and separate the compliance work from anything cosmetic so you can see exactly what is needed and what is optional.
