A sliding gate exists to solve problems a swing gate cannot. The most common is grade: a driveway that rises from the street will bind a swinging leaf partway through its arc, because the leaf sweeps across ground that is not level. A slide gate travels horizontally and is indifferent to that slope. The second is space, since a swing needs a clear arc inside the property that many frontages simply do not have.

What a slide gate needs instead is length. The leaf has to go somewhere when the gate opens, which means clear run along the fence line, and on a cantilever it means more than the opening width because the counterbalance tail travels back too. Establishing whether that run genuinely exists, and whether it will stay clear once the property is in normal use, is the first thing we check on site. A yard that accumulates parked trailers in the run-back is a yard where the gate stops working.

V-Track Rolling Gates

A V-track gate runs on grooved wheels along a steel track fixed across the opening, guided by rollers on the posts. It is the more economical sliding design and works well where the driving surface stays clean and vehicle loads are moderate. We specify guide rollers and non-pinch rollers so there is no exposed nip point at the post, and set the track into a properly prepared base, because a track laid on ground that later settles will lift and derail the gate no matter how good the leaf is.

Cantilever Slide Gates

A cantilever gate carries its entire weight on truck assemblies running inside semi-enclosed track mounted to posts on one side, leaving the opening completely clear of hardware. Nothing crosses the driving surface, so there is no rail for a loaded trailer to crush and no channel to fill with gravel. That is why cantilever is the standard specification for yards with constant heavy traffic. The counterbalance tail is what makes it work and also what constrains it, since it needs clear run-back room behind the opening.

Posts, Track and Foundations

Sliding gates put their load into the posts rather than spreading it along a fence line, and on a cantilever those posts carry the whole leaf in bending. We size post footings to the leaf weight and its overhang rather than to a standard depth, and check what the posts will actually be founded in, since made ground and old utility trenches are common on these frontages. A cantilever post that moves takes the track alignment with it and the gate never runs properly again until the footing is corrected.

Materials and Finish

Slide gates are usually longer than swing gates and therefore heavier, so material choice affects the running gear directly. Aluminum extruded from 6005-T5 and 6061-T6 alloy reduces the load on trucks, rollers and operator and will not corrode. Steel is stiffer over a long span and repair-weldable after damage. Whichever is used, steel components are prepared and coated before assembly with zinc-rich primer at welds and TGIC polyester powder over the top.

Slide gate operators are rack-driven or chain-driven and are sized from leaf weight, leaf length and daily cycle count rather than opening width. We match the UL 325 class to the application, since a yard gate cycling continuously is a commercial duty even where the site is small. Rack-driven units depend on the rack staying correctly aligned to the pinion along the entire run, so we set and check that alignment across full travel rather than at the closed position alone.

Safety Devices on a Sliding Gate

A sliding gate creates different hazards from a swinging one, principally the shear point where the leaf passes a fixed post and the risk of a vehicle stopped in the opening. UL 325 requires two independent means of monitored entrapment protection, and ASTM F2200 governs the gate construction, including screening any gaps that close during travel. We fit photo eyes and edges to the monitored inputs and add exit, safety and shadow loops where traffic volume justifies them.

Yard, Loading and Industrial Applications
