Bellflower Metal Gates builds and installs commercial security gates across Bellflower, California, serving surrounding cities including La Mirada, Cypress, Buena Park, Pico Rivera and Stanton. We fabricate cantilever slide gates for truck and trailer yards, scissor and side-folding storefront gates, roll-up rolling steel security doors, apartment and HOA community gates, and the loading-area and trash enclosure gates that Bellflower’s own zoning code requires of commercial and industrial properties.
Commercial gate work differs from residential work in one respect that shapes everything else: on a commercial site the gate is usually there because a code, an insurer or an operations requirement says it has to be, and it is specified to a standard rather than to a preference. Getting the standard wrong is not a matter of taste. A trash enclosure gate that is not solid, or a loading-yard gate that is five feet where the code says six, is a correction notice rather than a design difference, and it is discovered at the least convenient possible moment.
The second difference is duty. A residential driveway gate might cycle six times a day, while a distribution yard gate cycles that many times an hour, and hardware sized for the first fails quickly in the second. We specify operators, hinges, rollers and track from the cycle count and the leaf weight rather than from the opening width, which is the number most quotes are unfortunately built on.
Yard and Perimeter Gates

Cantilever Slide Gates for Truck and Trailer Yards
A cantilever gate spans the opening without touching the ground, carrying its load on truck assemblies that run inside semi-enclosed track mounted to posts on one side. Nothing crosses the driving surface, so there is no ground rail for a loaded trailer to crush and no channel to pack with gravel and debris. That is why it is the standard answer for yards with constant heavy traffic. The constraint is run-back room, since the counterbalance tail needs clear space behind the opening, and we check that space is genuinely available and will stay available before specifying one.
Loading and Parking Area Enclosure Gates
Bellflower section 17.52.110(B) requires open areas used for parking or loading vehicles over one and a half tons rated capacity to be enclosed by a solid masonry wall or solid fence six feet high, with solid entrance and exit gates. The specification of solid applies to the gate leaf itself, which is what catches most properties out: a compliant wall with an open-picket gate across the opening does not meet it. We build those leaves as framed solid panels sized to the same six feet and hang them on hardware rated for the weight that solid infill adds.
Trash Enclosure Gates
Section 17.52.120(A) requires a trash area to be enclosed by a five-foot high solid masonry, brick or concrete wall, with the access way closed by solid decorative gates of the same height, and 17.52.120(D) requires the area to stay closed against visibility from the public right of way. Five feet, not six, and decorative rather than plain. We fabricate to that figure and fit self-closing hardware, because an enclosure whose gates are propped open all day satisfies neither the code nor the reason it exists.
Storefront and Building Security
Scissor and Side-Folding Security Gates
Scissor gates and side-folding gates concertina back against the jamb during trading hours and draw across the opening at close, securing the entrance while leaving the glazing and window display visible from the street. That visibility is often the deciding factor for a retail tenant who does not want the shopfront reading as shuttered and vacant overnight. These gates take heavy daily cycling and wear at their guides, bottom bars and locking points, all of which are serviceable components we replace rather than condemning the whole assembly.
Roll-Up Rolling Steel Security Doors
Where a full visual closure is wanted rather than an open lattice, a roll-up rolling steel door provides it, with the curtain coiling into a barrel above the opening. They suit service bays, warehouse openings and storefronts in higher-exposure locations. Motorised units get the same treatment as any other powered opening: an operator matched to the curtain weight and cycle count, and safety devices that are wired to their monitored inputs rather than bridged out to silence a nuisance fault.
Multi-Tenant, Apartment and HOA Gates
Shared vehicle gates serve people who did not choose the equipment and cannot be trained on it, which changes what good specification means. Reliability matters more than features, the emergency access arrangement has to work for fire and for ambulance, and the access control has to handle residents changing without a physical remote being handed back. We size these for genuinely continuous duty, because a community gate cycling through every resident twice daily is a commercial application regardless of the building being residential.
Compliance, Safety and Access
Height Limits on Commercial Frontage
Under section 17.72.060(D) the front ten feet of a commercial or industrial property is held to 42 inches unless the fence is constructed of wrought iron, which may reach six feet. Along side and rear property lines the limits are eight feet for commercial and ten feet for industrial. Anything over six feet requires Planning Director approval. Because the code names wrought iron specifically as the route to height at the street, the material choice on a commercial frontage is a compliance decision before it is an appearance one.
UL 325 Duty Classes and Entrapment Protection
UL 325 classifies gate operators by application, and the class matters on a commercial site because it describes what the unit is built to survive. A Class III commercial or Class IV restricted-access operator is a different machine from a Class I residential one. Every automatic vehicular gate needs two independent means of monitored entrapment protection regardless of class, and the gate itself has to be built to ASTM F2200, which addresses the pinch and shear points that cause most entrapment incidents.
Emergency Access and Fire Department Requirements
A secured commercial site still has to admit fire apparatus, and California Fire Code fire apparatus access road requirements are what drive the obligation. The usual arrangement is a Knox box or a fire department key switch wired directly to the operator, agreed with the authority having jurisdiction. We settle this at design stage and build it into the drawing, so the requirement is not a change order and an inspection failure after the gate is already installed.
Loop Detection and Vehicle Sensing
High-traffic commercial openings justify proper inductive loop detection rather than photo eyes alone. An exit loop opens the gate for a departing vehicle, a safety loop holds it open while something is under it, and a shadow loop stops it closing on a vehicle stopped in the opening. Loops are saw-cut into the surface and sealed rather than surface-mounted, because a loop that sits proud of the concrete is destroyed by the first few weeks of tire traffic.
