Those five measurements determine which gate types are genuinely available before any drawing begins.

They also determine what will fail if ignored. A swing leaf on a rising drive binds at mid-travel, and a slide gate on a frontage with no run-back has nowhere to go. A heavy leaf on a shallow footing pulls its post out of plumb within a year and drags from then on. We would rather find those in the first hour than in the first winter.

Choosing the Right Driveway Gate Type

Swing Gates, Single and Double

A swing gate is the simplest arrangement and the best-looking on most residential frontages, with a single leaf on narrower drives and a pair on wider ones. Its requirement is level ground through the whole arc plus clear space behind. We check the sweep against the driveway slope and against anything parked inside, since the constraint is almost never the closed position. A double gate halves the sweep of each leaf, which is often what makes a swing workable on a drive where a single leaf would have nowhere to go.

Sliding and Cantilever Gates

A slide gate suits a driveway that rises from the street, because its travel is horizontal and grade becomes irrelevant. V-track slide gates run on a ground track with guide rollers and non-pinch rollers, which is economical where the surface stays clean. A cantilever carries its weight on truck assemblies in semi-enclosed track with no ground rail at all, which is the better answer where vehicles cross the opening constantly. The trade-off with a cantilever is run-back room, since the counterbalance tail needs clear space behind the opening equal to a substantial fraction of the gate’s own length.

Bi-Fold Gates for Tight Frontages

Bi-fold gates fold each leaf back on itself, so they need roughly half the clearance of a conventional swing and open considerably faster. On the short frontages common in this part of Los Angeles County that is often what makes an automated gate possible at all, particularly where section 9.04.040 has already ruled out swinging outward toward the street. They also clear the opening faster than a single long leaf, which matters where a vehicle would otherwise be waiting in the traffic lane while the gate travels.

Materials and Construction

Wrought Iron Driveway Gates

Iron remains the most requested material here, and it carries a practical advantage as well as an appearance one: an open picket design is transparent enough to meet Bellflower’s 50 percent rule where a solid panel is not. We fabricate from ASTM A787 steel tube with solid pickets, and specify hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 underneath the finish where a gate sees standing water or heavy irrigation. Iron also takes a repair weld years later, so a leaf damaged by a reversing vehicle is a repair rather than a replacement, which is not true of every material.

Aluminum Driveway Gates

Aluminum gates extruded from 6005-T5 and 6061-T6 alloy will not rust, which makes them the sensible replacement on a property where a steel gate has already corroded through once. The lighter leaf also reduces load on hinges and on the operator, so the running gear lasts longer. We specify heavier wall sections in the bottom rail, since aluminum dents where steel would deflect. Because the leaf is lighter it also allows a smaller operator for the same width, which reduces both the installed cost and the load the running gear carries every cycle.

Finishes and Corrosion Protection

Finish is the difference between a gate that looks new in ten years and one that does not. All steel is prepared and coated before the frame is assembled, so the inside faces and joint interiors are protected rather than left bare, with zinc-rich primer at welded joints and TGIC polyester powder coating over the top. Matte black and bronze are the most requested colours, though the powder range covers any specification. We recoat rather than paint over a failing finish, since coating on top of existing corrosion traps it and the rust continues underneath where it cannot be seen.

Design, Height and Bellflower’s Rules

Front Yard Height and the 48-Inch Allowance

In a required front yard, section 17.72.060(F) caps a fence, wall or hedge at 42 inches, and allows 48 inches where the material above 24 inches is at least 50 percent transparent. That six inches is available to an open picket or scrollwork design and unavailable to a solid one, which is a real argument for ironwork at the front of a property rather than masonry. Behind the required front yard the limit changes to six feet under section 17.72.060(E), so a driveway gate set back from the frontage may have more height available than the same gate at the property line.

Matching the Gate to the Elevation

We draw the gate to the house rather than to a catalogue. Arched tops and scrollwork suit Spanish and Mediterranean elevations, horizontal slats read correctly against mid-century houses, and a heavy-railed ranch design suits wide, low frontages. The arch radius and the picket spacing are set from the actual opening, because a stock radius against a non-standard pilaster spacing looks wrong from the street even when nothing is technically incorrect. We photograph and measure existing ironwork on the property first where there is any, so a new gate reads as part of the house rather than as something bought separately.

Posts, Footings and What Holds It Up

The gate is only as good as what it hangs on. We size post footings to the leaf weight and its leverage rather than to a standard depth, because a long single swing puts far more overturning force into its hinge post than a pair of shorter leaves. Getting that wrong is the single most expensive mistake on a driveway gate, since correcting it means taking out concrete. On automated gates the footing carries cycling loads as well as static ones, so we size for the operator’s thrust and the daily cycle count rather than for the weight alone.

The leaf is cut, welded, prepared and coated in our own shop. Because we build it, a panel damaged in handling is remade rather than reordered and waited on.

Installation and Automation

Posts are set to the designed footing, the leaf is hung and levelled, and where the gate is automated the operator is sized to the actual leaf weight and daily cycle count and installed to UL 325 with monitored entrapment protection. Every safety device is tested through full travel under load rather than assumed to work from a single cycle off the bench.

Handover and Return Visit

Should I choose a swing gate or a sliding gate?

The driveway decides it more often than taste does. A swing gate needs level ground through its whole arc and clear space behind it, so a drive that rises from the street will bind one partway open. How wide should a driveway gate be?

How much clearance does a driveway gate need underneath?

Enough to clear the highest point of the driveway through the entire swing, which is not the same as clearance at the closed position. Driveways crown across their width and often rise toward the garage, so a gate set to a tight gap at the post will ground itself at mid-travel. We measure the arc rather than the gap.

Can you match a gate to fencing or a wall already on the property?

Yes. We fabricate to a dimensioned drawing rather than from a catalogue, so picket spacing, rail heights and top profile can be matched to existing ironwork, and the powder coat is specified to the colour rather than to a nearest standard. Where the existing work is old we usually recommend recoating it at the same time so the two do not diverge.
