Bellflower Metal Gates designs, fabricates and installs metal gates in Pico Rivera, covering retail and commercial properties, service and loading yards, and residential driveway and entry gates. We build in steel, wrought iron and aluminum in our own shop and install the operators, loop detection and access control that make a gate usable day to day.
A distinctive feature of gate work in Pico Rivera is the scale of the commercial parcels. The city carried major industrial employment for decades, and large sites of that kind have since been redeveloped into retail and mixed commercial use. What that leaves behind is unusually large lot geometry: long frontages, wide service accesses, deep yards and openings sized originally for industrial vehicles rather than for delivery vans.
Those openings are the interesting problem. A twenty-plus foot service access does not take a residential-scale solution, and the gate that closes it has to deal with span, weight and wind load simultaneously. We size the frame, the running gear and the operator from the actual leaf rather than scaling up a smaller design, because a long gate built as though it were a short one sags, drags and eventually destroys its own hardware.
Gates for Retail and Commercial Sites

Wide Service and Delivery Openings
Large commercial openings favour sliding and cantilever gates over swing leaves, because a single swing long enough to close a wide access becomes unmanageable in both weight and sweep. A cantilever carries its load on truck assemblies in semi-enclosed track and never touches the driving surface, so delivery vehicles crossing the threshold constantly cannot crush a ground rail. The trade-off is run-back room behind the opening, which large parcels here usually have.
Loading Docks and Yard Enclosure
Loading areas need enclosing in a way that survives daily use rather than merely satisfying a drawing. We build solid-infill leaves on heavy frames for these openings, allowing for the considerable weight solid infill adds compared with an open picket gate, and specify hinges, rollers and operators for that weight rather than for the opening dimension. Bottom rails are built heavier where reversing vehicles make contact.
Trash and Waste Enclosure Gates
Waste enclosure gates take more punishment than almost anything else on a commercial property, absorbing repeated contact from bins and service vehicles in a confined space. They are also the item most often built too light and replaced within a couple of years. We fabricate with reinforced bottom rails, fit self-closing hardware rated to carry the leaf all the way to the latch, and set posts on footings sized for repeated impact.
Retail Frontage and Storefront Security
Where a retail unit needs securing overnight without the frontage reading as abandoned, scissor and side-folding security gates fold back against the jamb by day and close across the opening at night while leaving glazing visible. Roll-up rolling steel doors provide a solid closure where that is preferred. Both fail at guides, bottom bars and locking points long before their panels wear, and those are components we replace rather than condemning the assembly.

Industrial and Yard Perimeters
Perimeter Gates on Large Parcels
Deep commercial parcels need perimeter gates that close reliably at the end of a shift and resist casual entry overnight. We build these as cantilever slides or heavy double swings depending on the geometry available, and we check the run-back space is genuinely clear and likely to remain so, because yards accumulate stored pallets and parked trailers in precisely the space a cantilever needs to open into.
Vehicle Detection and Traffic Flow
On a site with regular commercial traffic, inductive loops do the work that keeps vehicles moving. An exit loop releases a departing vehicle with no driver action, a safety loop holds the gate open while something is beneath it, and a shadow loop prevents closure onto a vehicle stopped in the opening. Loops are saw-cut into the surface and sealed rather than surface-mounted, since a proud loop does not survive heavy tire traffic.
Commercial-Duty Operators
A yard gate cycling continuously through a working day is a different machine from a residential driveway gate, and specifying it as though it were not is the most common and most expensive error on commercial sites. We match the UL 325 class to the actual application, choosing a Class III commercial or Class IV restricted-access unit where the duty calls for it, and size with margin so there is reserve rather than running the unit permanently at its rating.
Emergency Services Access
Commercial sites still have to admit fire apparatus, and California Fire Code fire apparatus access road requirements drive the obligation. The usual arrangement is a Knox box or a fire department key switch wired to the operator, agreed with the authority having jurisdiction and consistent across every gated entrance. Settling this at design stage costs very little; retrofitting it after an inspection failure costs several times as much and stops the site in the meantime.
Residential Gates in Pico Rivera
Driveway Gates on Established Streets
Pico Rivera was incorporated in 1958 from the two communities of Pico and Rivera, taking its name from Pío Pico, the last Mexican governor of Alta California. Its residential streets were largely built out in the decades either side of that, and the frontages are generally regular, which suits gate work: a level approach means a swing gate can be used without the binding that a rising driveway causes partway through the arc.
Reading the Opening First
Even a favourable frontage has to be measured rather than assumed. We take the clear width between finished faces, the slope from the street, the crown across the driveway and the arc a leaf would sweep, then check what room exists behind or alongside for the gate to travel into. Those measurements decide which gate types are genuinely available before any drawing begins, and they routinely rule one out.
Design Drawn to the House
We draw the gate to the elevation rather than selecting from stock widths. Arched tops with scrollwork suit Spanish and Mediterranean houses, horizontal slats read correctly against low mid-century frontages, and wide low elevations take a heavy-railed design with widely spaced verticals. Every wide leaf gets a diagonal brace from the hinge stile toward the latch stile, because a wide gate without one will sag inside its first year.
Side-Yard and Oversized Vehicle Gates
Side-yard gates wide enough for an RV, boat trailer or work truck carry substantially more leaf than a pedestrian gate and need hardware to match. We build them as a double swing, a slide or a cantilever depending on the room the yard actually has, hang them on ball-bearing or weld-on hinges with grease fittings, and size the post footings to the leaf rather than to a standard depth.
Materials, Finish and Handover
Fabrication in Our Own Shop
Every leaf is cut, welded, prepared and coated by us, which changes what happens when something goes wrong. A panel damaged in handling or a joint landing out of square is remade the same week rather than reordered from a supplier while an opening stands unsecured. We keep the dimensioned drawing for every gate we build, so a replacement section years later matches rather than approximates.
Choosing the Material
Steel and wrought iron carry a long span stiffly and can be repair-welded years later, which matters on commercial openings where reversing vehicles make contact. Aluminum extruded from 6005-T5 and 6061-T6 alloy will not corrode and is lighter, reducing load on running gear and often allowing a smaller operator. On long spans the stiffness of steel frequently decides it regardless of the corrosion argument.
Preparation and Coating
Corrosion begins in the places nobody can inspect, so steel is prepared and coated before the frame is assembled and the joint interiors and inside faces are protected rather than sealed in bare. Welded joints take zinc-rich primer with TGIC polyester powder coating over the top, and where a gate stands in standing water or constant irrigation overspray, hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 goes underneath the finish.
Testing, Handover and Local Rules
Every installation is run through full travel under load with each safety device tested rather than assumed working, and you receive a written handover covering operator programming, remote pairing and the manual release. Height limits and approval thresholds are set by each city separately, so we confirm the requirements that govern the specific property before drawing rather than carrying a figure across from a neighbouring jurisdiction.
Access Control and Site Security
Controlling Contractor and Delivery Access
Commercial sites need to admit deliveries and contractors without handing out permanent credentials, and time-limited codes on a cellular controller do exactly that. A code issued for a delivery window expires by itself, which avoids the familiar position where a shared keypad code is eventually known to every driver and subcontractor who has ever visited the property and cannot practically be changed.
Credentials for Staff and Tenants
Where a site has regular staff or multiple tenants, proximity cards and fobs give per-user access that is issued and revoked individually. Removing a departing user touches nobody else’s access and requires no hardware back. We specify readers rated for outdoor mounting and run their cabling in conduit, because a reader is a low-voltage device standing in weather and its wiring fails long before the unit does.
Intercom and Remote Release
Gates that need a person to make the decision take video intercom or telephone entry, routing the call to an office, a mobile or a specific extension. On a large parcel the distance between the gate and whoever answers is the practical constraint, which is why we check the cable path and, on cellular units, confirm signal strength at the actual post position rather than at the building.
Scheduling and After-Hours Security
Commercial properties usually want the gate behaving differently across the working day, standing open for deliveries in set hours and credential-only outside them. Scheduling that in the controller removes the daily reliance on someone remembering to secure the yard at closing. We configure it at handover and show how to change it, since an operating pattern nobody on site can edit stops matching reality within a few months.
