Bellflower Metal Gates designs, fabricates and installs metal gates in Fountain Valley, building driveway gates, entry gates, side-yard gates and commercial gates in steel, wrought iron and aluminum. Everything is cut, welded, prepared and coated in our own shop, and we set the posts and footings ourselves rather than leaving the groundwork to somebody else.
Fountain Valley takes its name from the very high water table that characterised the area, and from the artesian wells that came with it. The land Thomas Talbert’s family bought in the 1890s was peat and swamp, and the farmland that followed only existed because settlers cut drainage canals across it. The suburb built on top of that in the 1960s is comfortable and level, but the ground underneath is still what it always was.
That matters for gates more than for almost any other structure on a residential property, because a gate is a heavy object cantilevered off a post, and a post is only as good as what it is founded in. Ground with a high water table and compressible organic content does not hold a standard footing the way firm ground does. A post that moves takes the leaf out of alignment permanently, and correcting it means breaking out concrete.
Ground Conditions and Footings

Why the Water Table Matters Here
A gate post resists overturning by mobilising the ground around it, and saturated or soft ground offers much less resistance than firm ground at the same depth. On a property where the water table is high, a footing sized from a standard table can be genuinely inadequate even though it looks generous on paper. We size from the leaf weight and its leverage against the conditions actually present rather than from a default depth.
Establishing What Is Underneath
We check what each post will bear on before pouring anything rather than assuming the ground is uniform across a frontage. Former agricultural land that has been drained, filled and built over is rarely consistent, and old canal alignments, service trenches and made ground all behave differently from undisturbed soil. Twenty minutes establishing that at survey is the cheapest insurance available on the whole job.
Footings Sized to the Leaf
A long single swing puts far more overturning force into its hinge post than a pair of shorter leaves, and an automated gate adds cycling loads on top of static weight because the operator drives the post thousands of times a year. We size footings for both, and on soft ground we go wider or deeper rather than accepting a standard detail, since this is the one element of a gate that cannot be corrected cheaply afterwards.
Drainage Around the Gate
Water collecting at the base of a post is bad for the footing and bad for the bottom rail of the leaf. We look at where surface water actually goes during the survey and keep hardware, tracks and the bottom of the leaf clear of the flow path where we can. On a sliding gate this matters twice over, because a ground track that sits in standing water fills with silt and stops running properly.

Driveway and Entry Gates
Reading the Opening First
Every gate starts from the measured opening rather than a nominal width. We take the clear distance between finished faces, the slope from the street, the crown across the driveway and the arc a leaf would sweep, then check what space exists behind or alongside for the gate to travel into. Those measurements decide which types are genuinely available before any drawing begins.
Swing, Slide or Bi-Fold
Fountain Valley’s 1960s tracts are generously laid out and largely level, which is favourable: a level approach means a swing gate works without the binding a rising driveway causes partway through its arc, and there is usually room behind the leaf. Where a frontage is narrower, a bi-fold folds each leaf back on itself and needs roughly half the clearance, and a slide suits openings with clear run along the fence line.
Design Drawn to the House
We draw to the elevation rather than from a stock range. Horizontal slats read cleanly against the low, wide elevations common in tract housing of this era, while arched tops with scrollwork suit Spanish and Mediterranean houses and a heavy-railed design with generously spaced verticals suits wide frontages. Picket spacing is set from the measured opening so the reveal stays even across the leaf.
Side-Yard and Oversized Vehicle Gates
Side-yard gates wide enough for an RV, boat trailer or work truck carry considerably more leaf than a pedestrian gate, and on soft ground the footing question returns with more force because the loads are larger. We build them as a double swing, slide or cantilever according to the room available, and hang them on ball-bearing or weld-on hinges with grease fittings sized to the leaf.
Materials and Protection
Choosing Between Steel and Aluminum
Steel and wrought iron carry a span stiffly and take a repair weld years later, so a leaf damaged by a vehicle is repairable rather than terminal. Aluminum extruded from 6005-T5 and 6061-T6 alloy is lighter, which reduces the load the footing has to carry as well as the load on hinges and operator, and on soft ground that weight saving is a genuine structural argument rather than only a convenience.
Coating That Reaches the Joints
Steel is prepared and coated before the frame is assembled, so the inside faces and joint interiors are protected rather than sealed in bare where nothing can reach them again. Welded joints receive zinc-rich primer with TGIC polyester powder coating over the top, which holds colour under direct sun considerably longer than a wet-applied enamel and resists chipping better under everyday knocks.
Protecting the Bottom of the Leaf
The lowest part of a gate takes the worst of it, sitting closest to irrigation and to any water moving across the driveway. We specify hot-dip galvanizing to ASTM A123 beneath the finish where a gate will stand in standing water or heavy overspray, and seal tube ends so a bottom rail cannot fill and hold water inside where no inspection will ever find it.
Hardware Sized to Last
Undersized hinges are the most common false economy on a gate, because a heavy leaf works light hinge pins oval and then drops progressively. We fit ball-bearing or weld-on hinges with grease fittings sized to the actual leaf weight, and specify hydraulic closers or electromagnetic locks where a gate needs to hold itself shut reliably rather than relying on somebody pulling it to.
Automation and Access Control
Operators Sized to the Leaf
The operator is specified from the leaf weight, its leverage and the number of cycles it will run daily rather than from the opening width, which is the number most quotes are built on. We match the UL 325 class to the application and select with margin rather than to the rating, so there is reserve for a stiffening hinge or a leaf that has picked up a slight drag.
Entrapment Protection and Standards
Every automatic vehicular gate needs two independent means of entrapment protection, monitored by the operator so it refuses to run when one is faulted or disconnected. The gate itself is built to ASTM F2200, which addresses the pinch and shear points responsible for most incidents. Where a nuisance fault recurs we find its cause rather than bridging the input out to stop the complaint.
Entry Systems and Loop Detection
Keypads, video intercom and cellular controllers all suit a private driveway, and the choice comes down to how many people need access and whether visitors have to be admitted remotely. Where traffic justifies it, inductive loops release departing vehicles automatically and hold the gate open while something is beneath it, saw-cut and sealed into the surface rather than surface-mounted.
Emergency Access and Power Failure
Gated properties require an approved means of emergency access under California Fire Code fire apparatus access road requirements, normally a Knox box or a fire department key switch wired to the operator. Every operator also has a manual release that disengages the drive so the leaf can be moved by hand during an outage, and we cover its location and use explicitly at handover.
Fabrication, Installation and Handover
Built in Our Own Shop
Every leaf is cut, welded, prepared and coated by us rather than assembled from bought-in panels, so a gate is built to the opening it will actually fill instead of being packed out at one side. A section damaged in handling is remade the same week, and we keep the dimensioned drawing so a replacement years later matches the original rather than approximating it.
The Drawing Before the Steel
You approve a dimensioned shop drawing before anything is cut, showing the gate as it will be built, with heights checked against the limits that apply to your parcel. Changes at that stage cost nothing, which is precisely why the drawing comes first rather than being produced afterwards as a record of what was already made.
Setting Posts and Hanging the Leaf
Posts are set to the designed footing rather than a standard one, the leaf is hung and levelled, and where the gate is automated the operator is installed and commissioned with every safety device tested through full travel under load. We do the groundwork ourselves rather than subcontracting it, because on ground like this the footing is the part of the job that determines whether the rest holds up.
The Settling Visit and Local Rules
We return once the gate has settled on its footings to re-level the hinges and re-tension the hardware, and on soft ground that visit earns its place rather than being a courtesy, because new concrete and a newly loaded post both move over the first weeks. Height limits and approval thresholds are set city by city, so we confirm what governs the property before drawing.
